‘Perfect Setting for a delightful holiday’

La Buia was the perfect setting for a delightful holiday. On the border of Umbria and Tuscany, the surrounding countryside is gorgeous and the house is near-perfect. My in-laws booked a one week holiday for them, their two adult children, spouses and one teenager (7 total). The house is spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated. The grounds are exquisite and enjoyable to stroll through. The pool is quite nice, although we relaxed by it rather than swim since the Fall chill had started by the time we arrived. Richard and Lucie are welcoming, but low-key, hosts who strive to provide a beautiful retreat while not being intrusive. There is a basket filled with tourism brochures, menus, guidebooks, etc. My favorite local tip was Lucie’s “Circular Walk,” which is a 5K loop around the surrounding countryside.

Several of us are runners and we ran the loop on several days. It is a beautiful challenge! It’s very hilly, which provides beautiful views and the sensation that your heart will explode (from the cardiovascular effort, although perhaps from the beauty too). I highly recommend the arrival dinner cooked by a local Italian couple. The house is filled with amazing smells upon your arrival and they cook a true feast- antipasti, pasta, meat, and dessert. There was so much food leftover! They were also quite kind in 100% accommodating a person’s dairy allergy with separate portions, which allowed the rest of us to feast with butter and cheese! In addition, they brought a fantastic sparkler candle for the teenager’s birthday celebration. Although the house would be perfect to lounge around in all week, we are a very active group and made several day trips.

The house is set back from the main road and the backroads are in fair condition so while completely navigable, can add time to any road trips. We also tripped the breaker a few times early on before we figured out how to time appliance usage. Richard was very responsive in helping us reset it. This has been the most relaxing and harmonious holiday. Flowing living space, just lovely! – Lavinia – London July 2016

‘Spectacularly Stunning’

The landscape within which this amazing Tower sits is simply stunning. Quiet, peaceful and full of the meditative sounds of nature with amazing views. The gardens are filled with herbs, honeysuckle, jasmine and lavender. The tower is decorated in neutral tones and is in impeccable taste. The mattress is so comfortable you cannot fail to have a wondrous sleep. Although the beauty of the night sky can be a distraction. The kitchen is kitted out for even the most ambitious cook and the pool is fantastic. To top it all Lucie and Richard, the owners who live near-by, are charming, couldn’t be more helpful or more entertaining but are 100% respectful of your privacy. We left wishing we could stay for months !! If you are looking for a superbly designed yet sympathetic hideaway, this place cannot be bettered.

I am an interior designer and this house has been decorated very sensitively and beautifully with a mix of contemporary Italian plus well placed antiques. Lorna – Ireland.

‘A special place to stay it comes with its own tranquility’

The perfect rental for a catch up with friends/family, 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and each one on a different floor. Plenty of living space too to spread out and enjoy the calm. This is also a feature of the garden with lots of separate seating areas away from the house to just sit and enjoy the view. The nearest town is about 15 mins away by car, with plenty of shops and restaurants at Citta di Castello but you don’t have to go out or cook because Lucie (who made us very welcome) will provide a three course meal at a very reasonable price and deliver it to the house. This worked so well for us on our first night after a drive from Rome airport. Wish we had spent more time at the house but we only stayed 5 nights and there was a lot to see locally and a day trip to Sienna. Would definitely consider another visit but this time to enjoy the comfort of the house and the pool. Special mention for the beds and the sofas which were really comfortable.

‘The Perfect Vacation’

Each year our September stay gets better. Peter and I know the villa now but when we arrived our memory of it, over the past year, has failed us somewhat as the delight of being at The Tobacco Tower again exceeds everything! All the new things you add each year to make guests feel more comfortable do the place justice and what a heart warming gesture. Our American friends with us this time loved every minute. They were ‘blown away’ by the scenery as well and what a haven for busy politicians to relax in!

On seeing this villa, I now want to rent out my Italian holiday home to others and come and stay here instead!  Jeremy.

Dear Richard and Lucie,
I had to write and tell you what a marvelous  holiday we had at The Tobacco Tower this past summer. One of the things we really liked about it was that the layout allows everyone to disappear into their own pockets of privacy. Very clever! I loved the courtyard effect as you arrive. Next time we come I’m going to have the masseurs booked as spa relaxation is an added bonus anywhere. Many thanks, great place!

Hi there, I’m writing to say that all the herbs I took back from the garden (thank you) are enhancing my Italian cooking efforts no end. I’ve frozen them in ice cube trays. When I get a whiff of their scent, I’m transported immediately back to The Tobacco Tower and it’s magical five star ‘thing’ it offers. We’ll be back!

The Tobacco Tower at La Buia is a great find. We could not believe our luck! It has everything as far as we were concerned. The setting is straight out of a movie; a beautiful Italian movie! The wildlife enchanted our children as there was such an abundance of butterflies. I loved the labels round the garden near the house telling you what herbs there were to pick. A triumph!

Dear Lucie and Richard,

We wanted to thank you for a wonderful week long vacation that we had in your villa. You exceeded our expectations in every way. The house is beautiful and full of charm from the outside and from the inside. The restoration work that you have done and the selection of beautiful art and furniture kept the character of a beautiful Tuscan/Umbrian home. We could see the incredible investment and attention to details also in the superb way that the kitchen is equipped which we enjoyed tremendously. Your attitude had the perfect balance of giving us the space and privacy and on the other hand being there for advice and support. We felt the warmth and caring in every step for example : by setting up the fire on a snowy day just before we returned, shoveling the snow all the way to the door step, turning off the central heating on the day that we could not return from Florence, or hauling us back and forth with Richard’s 4×4 when we got stuck in the snow. This will be our first choice when visiting Tuscany and when recommending a villa to others.
